Feel for a soft lump, where your fingers can compress down into the vertical line above and below your navel; it may indicate a separation. You can tell how big the space is by counting the finger widths between the muscles: One to two finger-widths is normal; three or more could be a sign of diastasis recti.
What does diastasis recti feel like while pregnant?
Severe diastasis recti may feel like a pool of Jell-O. That’s because the rectus abdominis muscles are pushed further apart, offering no resistance in the middle, even when you tighten your abs. Alternatively, you may notice a “pooch” around your belly button that looks like a ball of pizza dough.
How do you check for diastasis recti?
Move your other hand above and below your bellybutton, and all along your midline ab muscles. See if you can fit any fingers in the gaps between your muscles. If you feel a gap, or separation of one to two finger lengths, you likely have a moderate case of diastasis recti.
Can I do anything about diastasis recti while pregnant?
It’s possible to improve diastasis recti by repairing and strengthening your deep core muscles through a variety of abdominal exercises specifically targeting your transverse abdominis (TA).
Is it bad to tense your stomach while pregnant?

Can you tear stomach muscles while pregnant?
Abdominal muscles can be torn, split and damaged during pregnancy and childbirth; this condition is known as diastasis recti.
